Mt. Vihren is the second highest on the Balkan Peninsula at 2914m (9560ft) only after Mt. Musala, again in Bulgaria. And climbing Mt. Vihren is challenging.

Climbing a mountain peak is rarely easy, especially if you have not trained or are typically not a hiking or climbing person. Mounts and peaks, however, come in different shapes and forms just as conquering them is rated by difficulty.

Mount Vihren

Mt. Vihren is a tough one to climb. The easiest way to approach it is from the Vihren Hut which lies at about 16 km (accessible by car) of Bansko, the famous winter and ski resort. The hut is situated at an altitude of 1950 m, which leaves you about 1000m to climb. The signs advise that it takes about 3 hours to climb to the top of Mount Vihren from the Vihren Hut. For the most part that is correct give or take an hour, depending on your preparedness, weather conditions, and other factors.

Pirin Mountain

The Mountain of Pirin is considered the most beautiful in Bulgaria. Exquisite flora and amazing panoramic views will take your breath away. And so will climbing or hiking in Pirin. Its rocky terrain provides a challenge and uncertainty to travelers, and the path to the top of Mt. Vihren meanders through varying turfs.

Hike Prepared

On your way to top of the mountain you will spot several lakes, but make sure you pack enough water and a few snacks in your backpack. You will need the refreshments, and 3 or 4 hours hiking in the mountain is not equal to 3 or 4 hours of walking in the city. Also, remember to bring a jacket even if you are climbing in the summer. Weather changes quickly in the mountains, and at that elevation you will be lucky if you do not need a warmer piece of clothing.

Enjoy the Climb

Whatever the speed of your hike, take a moment to stop and enjoy the views. Your goal may be Mt. Vihren, but the journey that will take you there is just as marvelous as the stunning view from the top. Early July is a great time to go as it is warm enough, and you are likely to catch the peak in the clear and not buried in clouds as is often the case. A good rule of thumb in the mountains is to pace yourself. Do not rush ahead in the beginning only to have to stop more frequently, lose your breath, or even catch a cold. And as you go up and the level of oxygen in the air becomes less, your body will thank you if you take it easier.

Majestic Views

The last 40 minutes of your climb will feel like the steepest climb one can imagine. Standing at the foot of Mt. Vihren you can not see the top, but only white rocks and the open sky above you. As you make your way to the top you will notice tiny wild flowers in splendid purple and yellow colors. If you are lucky, you might even see an Edelweiss - a rare find in Bulgaria, and a precious and protected flower.

The views that will sprawl in front of your eyes from 2914 m are amazing. Standing high above cliffs and valleys is liberating, and taking in the pristine beauty of nature here in the cradle of Europe is truly astounding. Marvel at the beauty and enjoy the hike down!
